Day: 5

Date: 9 May 2001 (Wednesday)

Start:

End: Saugatuck/Holland MI (0 miles)

Still at my brother John’s house outside Holland, Michigan.

John & I went into Saugatuck to Bill Steininger’s bar (The Sand Bar Saloon) and drank coffee with Bill for a while. Then we went out for a late breakfast and after that to Lakeview Lanes to throw a few games.

Bill & I were pretty good bowlers as kids. I did all right for not having bowled in a year (141, 237, 18x, 217). Bill did about as well, then threw one game by himself. He got the first nine strikes, then a big split in the 10th frame for 262.

John & I returned to the house to find Dolores & Nancy gone – they showed up soon afterward (they’d been at lunch in Saugatuck). Watched the bird feeder for a bit and saw blue jays and orioles.

We chatted for a while and got the idea to get food at the supermarket in Holland and take it to my Mom’s house for dinner. We ate there, chatted a while, and left.

We drove along the Lake Michigan shore on the way home, and stopped at Laketown Beach Walk, a local park with a boardwalk over the sand dunes to the beach. Very pretty night, but a cloud line is moving in across the lake (from the west). Saw a bunch of wild turkeys and some deer.

Back to the house, chat, snack (we gotta go on a diet after we leave here) on strawberry pie, out to the trailer to TV, write this, and bed.
