Day: 8

Date: 13 May 2001 (Sunday)

Start: Saugatuck/Holland MI

End: Rantoul IL (250 miles)

Mother’s Day.

Departed brother John’s house outside Holland, Michigan around 9:00am EDT.

Used I-196, I-94, then US-421 and US-24 to avoid Chicago. Wound up using US-45 paralleling I-57 in Illinois to get to Rantoul and the campground at the former Chanute AFB. We arrived at 2pm CDT.

We ate lunch in Kentland, IN, at the "Good Table Family Restaurant". Dolores had half a baked chicken mashed potatoes and soup, and I had a tremendous ham slice with mashed potatoes and salad. With drinks and tip, it came to $17.80.

The campground is the former mobile home village at the base. The shower/laundry facility is outstanding. Fee is $15/night for electric, water, and sewer.

The airplane museum is still here. It bills itself as "The Largest Aerospace Museum in Illinois!" and was founded in 1994. You can see the outdoor exhibits across the runway from the campground.

We stopped early just to take it easy for the afternoon and evening.
