Date: 3 June 2001 (Sunday)

Start: Blue Spruce RV Park & Campground, Prince George BC

End: Northern Lights RV Park, Dawson Creek BC (261 miles)

It was dry and 45f when we got up and ate.

The road out of Prince George was vacant on this Sunday morning. After a bit, a few RV’s caught up and passed us (we’re not the fastest people on the road – we like to do about 55mph/90kph on these two lane roads).

Just out of PG, Dolores saw a small bear in the ditch eating. That was the only major wildlife sighting of the day.

We have a correction to our entry of a few days ago where we claimed the pass out of Jasper to PG was the lowest pass over the Rockies. It is not, the one we went over today was, at about 2,800 feet.

We left PG in hills, went into these low Rockies, went over the pass, and wound up on level plains. I guess that shouldn’t have surprised me if I’d thought ahead.

The reason Dawson Creek was chosen to be the starting point for the Alaskan Highway was that it was the end of the railroad. The reason the railroad came to Dawson Creek was the wheat and other grain grown here.

Dawson Creek is a basic town providing services to the region around except for the number of RV parks and restaurants that open in the summer to service the tourists headed for Alaska.

We had dinner in one of them tonight, and it was very good. D had steak and king crab, I had Salmon Wellington. Not bad at all.

The campground we checked into is full tonight – but it’s the only one in town that is. This one is hosting the start of a "caravan" – a group of 33 couples who will travel together to Alaska and part-way back, then disperse. They’re meeting here, getting to know each other, and preparing to travel.

I can’t envision travelling like that, but "never say never".

The evening (now) temp is 55f, cooling from a high of around 69. The mostly sunny day has been very pleasant.

We’ll start up the Alaskan Highway in the morning.
