to KOA, Pueblo CO
282 miles

We breakfasted & headed west on US-50. Cloudy, cool. Wind out of the northeast at 15+. At times, it was cool enough to roll up the cab windows. It was 66*F in the campground when we left and didn't get into the 70's until we got into Colorado. It's 82* here at the KOA. Good wifi connection.

US-50 follows the old Santa Fe Trail all the way to La Junta, CO, before the SFT swings to the southwest. There were several places saying you could see more wagon wheel ruts. Fuel is getting a little more expensive up in this corner of the world. Diesel $2.999 and Lo-test Gas $3.099. Or maybe it's gone up everywhere & we didn't get the word.

We gained an hour going into Mountain Daylight Time. Now we'll have to get used to TV programs at really weird hours.

From the KOA, we can see the Sangre de Christo mountains to the west. The KOA is in a desert eight miles north of Pueblo. There are cactus blooming with large red flowers all over the place. Dolores is going out after the sun gets lower to take pictures of them.

We unhooked to go to Safeway for groceries. On the way back, Dolores saw a prairie dog. I guess it really is desert.

We're next to I-25 but it's not a bother. There's a busy railroad on the far side of I-25 that may become a bother tonight.

Now we'll have dinner and then take a hike and settle in for the evening. The KOA handout says to beware of snakes, coyotes, antelope, spiders, and elk. I'll take a stick along on the hike.

Later:
Dolores took her flower pictures and came back in. The only wildlife she saw was a rabbit.

We had dinner and were watching the news when the severe storm warning came up. We looked outside & saw black wall clouds. We cranked up the computer and watched the NWS radar of Colorado. It showed storms heading for Pueblo from the north and west. Somehow, the heavy weather went east and south of us, leaving us only with a little rain and a lot of lightning.

Whew!!
