Day 31

Start: Country Inn Motel & Trailer Park, Gander, NF
End: Eastport Peninsula Sunshine Park, Eastport, NF
Miles: 51

The high today was 64f and the low was 41f last night or early this morning. The wind was calm all day until mid-afternoon. It was cloudy in the morning, but cleared for the afternoon; late in the afternoon, the clouds rolled in again. The forecast is for showers tonight and tomorrow.

This Sunday was a quiet day. We had breakfast in the little house, then sat around for a bit. Then we broke camp and headed out. It was intended to be a short trip and it was. We moved to a park just outside Terra Nova National Park.

After we checked in and set up the trailer, we took the truck out for a ride. We went to the Marine Interpretation Center, which is really the main building in the park. There, we bought our day-use passes, and saw a video on icebergs. We wandered through the building and did the touch-a-starfish pond. The lunchroom was open, so we had a soup and sandwich lunch there. Then we toured most of Terra Nova
park by truck. We viewed the scenery at the lookout points, we went through the campground, we took a short hike along a bay, and more of that sort of thing.

The hike produced our only wildlife sighting of the day, an active little red squirrel. The moose must take Sundays off.

Then we came back to the campground. We decided to “save” the rest of the point we’re on for tomorrow. Down the road a mile or so is a restaurant called the “Little Denier” that was recommended by the campground hosts. We had a nice pan-fried cod dinner there.

Then we went to find the beach in Eastport. There is one. It’s about 200 yards long, but by definition it’s a beach. It has sandy shores and sea grasses and all the things Hatteras has, in miniature. I’m not thinking of returning to swim, or even wade.

We returned then to the campground and the little house. We don’t have much planned for tomorrow, with the potential for rain. We’ll do what we can.
