Day 16
Start: Sandpoint RV Campground, Five Islands, NS
End:
Miles: 0
The low last night was 47f; the high today was 70f under mostly sunny skies. The wind was high in the
afternoon but slowed a little in the evening.
Dolores had been up early and caught a picture
of moonrise.
Today was dedicated to loafing. It was sort of a vacation from the vacation. We got up late, ate, and just
loafed around the trailer for most of the morning.
Then we took a walk along the
beach, on the small rocks and gravel that is underwater when the tide is in.
We came off the beach down the shore a ways and started talking with a couple that has a large 5er and big
Dodge diesel truck.
They had a number of hummingbird feeders around their trailer and said that they see them every day.
They live in Nova Scotia, near the NB border, and travel quite a bit. They keep the site here permanently,
so they can come down for a period any time they want.
He and I talked trucks for a while. He’s not happy with his new 24-valve diesel; said he got better mileage
with his old ’94 12-valve. I told him we were perfectly happy with our old animal and would probably
keep it till it drops.
He told me it’s impossible to buy a good used low-mileage truck in Canada. When dealers get a good
trade-in, they sell it to people who specialize in transporting it to the US, replacing the speedometer with a
US model, and selling it there. As an example, he asked what his truck would cost in the US. I told him
around $40kUS. He said he paid $50kCDN. If one were to take it to the states and sell it for $35kUS, he’d
make money. $50,000CDN = $32,700US. Interesting.
They told us about an interesting ride, so we went back to the trailer, had lunch, and took off on the ride.
We went about 50 miles east along the shore to a small town called Advocate Harbor. That’s just after the
village of Diligent River. There’s a point jutting out into the bay called Cape D’or. There are many
good
views from the top of the cape. We took several pictures, then wandered back to the campground.
After sitting a bit, we went to the little restaurant where our campground road intersects with route 2. As
we approached the intersection, a small fox ran across the road in front of us, coming from the field behind
the restaurant. The restaurant had flounder, so we had flounder dinners with home fries and house wine.
Not bad at all.
Back at the campground, Dolores got me out into the mud on the bottom of the Bay of Fundy (actually, it’s
pretty hard sand). We looked at snails and other critters, and took pictures up at the trailer.
After our hike, we cleaned the sand off our sneakers (it does stick a bit) and sat down. Dolores found a TV
show she likes on the Halifax channel, and I’m doing this.
Tomorrow, we’ll have at it again. We’ll head out early and head for the Halifax metropolitan area. The
last time I set foot in Halifax was 1959. It should be interesting to see it again. As well, it has all sorts of
tourist attractions and interesting places.
