June 15, 2003 Sunday Father's Day
Start: Model T Casino/Resort/RV, Winnemucca NV End: Burns RV Park, Burns OR Miles: 225 Hi Temp: 86.0 Lo Temp: 58.5
Today was an easier day in all but one regard - we drove straight into a stiff wind most of the way here. Mileage was down under 10mpg (9.94), even though we slowed down and took it a little easier.
The route from Winnemucca to Burns is another one of those routes that features sparse scenery. We took US-95 north into Oregon, then turned onto OR-78 at a "Y" in the boondocks to Burns. The scenery was pretty much the same all the way - sage brush and dry. There were a few sand dunes just north of Winnemucca that looked like they were trying to take over the road. The 20 miles just before Burns turn a little greener and crops under irrigation become frequent.
The weather (outside of the wind) was nice enough - a few high clouds and reasonable temperatures.
We could have gone on into Bend today, but we'd had enough of the wind. So we found this little park and settled in for the rest of the day. We lunched in the trailer and then went back downtown to get diesel fuel. We also stopped to get a cotter pin to repair the wrench used to lower the back legs of the trailer - it came apart again as we set up.
The we returned to the trailer. We made a phone call to son Bill, who just happened to be going to and entering our house when he answered his cell phone. We chatted and fooled around while he sorted through our mail and asked what he should do with some of the things received. None required immediate action.
We reserved a spot for the next four nights (extendable) at the Crown Villa RV Park in Bend, Oregon. They have wireless internet access, so I'll have to drag out my wireless card and give that a try.
We called Luann (Art's daughter) and left a message about arriving tomorrow, and called Art to tell him we're coming in. He had something going on with Morgan (Luann's oldest daughter) coming to get him in the afternoon, so the word will spread.
Then I put my jury-rigged fix onto the wrench, securing the movable socket to the wrench with a cotter pin. It should work for a while. What I really should do is to purchase an adapter that plugs into my B&D battery-powered geared screwdriver and adapts to a 3/8" square to plug into a 3/4" socket from my kit. Then I could put the driver into max torque and screw down (or up) the jacks. I'll have to find a big hardware store and investigate.
We watched the end of the US Open (Furyck won, with records), and read.
I did these notes and the photos (very few) that we took en route, and a few photos Dolores took here. Later we'll have our Father's Day dinner (lasagna and salad with merlot).
Into Bend tomorrow.
