10/2/16 Sunday
A Few PhotosChurch, then a trip to Fred Meyer's to get supplies for the week. Glenn, of Glenn & Marylou, (our guests for a few days) called to confirm things about their arrival tomorrow. Did house chores for a while.
Dolores was taking it easy, and I was restless, so I took a walk. I stopped at the Yard House for two beers while I watched the New Orleans - San Diego game. I looked for a small IGA grocery store and finally found it underground on 3rd Avenue. It will be good for ordinary things. Then I stopped at Walgreen's for beer and chips.
The rest of the day was quiet.
10/3/16 Monday
We relaxed until 1000 when we went to the airport to pick up Glenn & Marylou. Back to the condo to chat for a bit, then out through the market to lunch.
We came back through the market to the condo and got them settled into the guest suite. Since they'd been up at 0400, they took some time off. We relaxed until they came over, then chatted and talked and has a wine or two. We finally stopped that about 2330 and went to bed.
10/4/16 Tuesday
Some PhotosWe met Glenn & Lou just before 1000. We drove to Susan's place & talked with her for a while. We all hopped in the car and went to Purple in Woodinville in the heart of the wine country here. After a fine lunch (bit noisy, though) we went to Chateau Ste Michele winery for a tour and tasting episode. All enjoyed that and several bottles were bought to take back.
We dropped Susan off at her place and came home to the condo. We had cheese & crackers, and a glass of wine. Then we turned on the VP debate until we grew sick of it, then went up to a sandwich place in the market for a light snack. We left Glenn & Lou at the guest suite and walked home.
After that, it was just relaxing.
Except for looking at the projected track of hurricane Matthew, now forecast to move up the east coast of Florida. The current track has the center passing 30 miles east of Jax Beach, with an eye 20 miles wide. This could bring severe erosion and flooding to Jax Beach. In one way, we're doing quite well since we're a couple of thousand miles away. Also that Bill & Lana and the boys will be safe since they had planned the weekend in Atlanta long ago; they may leave a day early. Whatever happens, happens, and there isn't a thing we can do about it.
10/5/16 Wednesday
More PhotosThis was an interesting day. Glenn called an old friend and co-worker across the Sound. They agreed to meet for lunch. We tagged along. Onto the Bainbridge ferry, and off into Milo McManus's sedan for a four-block ride to a diner. Glenn & Milo talked, Lou & Sharon talked, we listened. It was a fine lunch.
Afterward, we all walked the street in Winslow until Dolores & I decided to walk back to the ferry so the car wouldn't be all that crowded. That worked well. Back to Seattle with wonderful views of the skyline.
Then the four of us joined Susan & Bryant in the downstairs part of Anthony's for dinner. That was a lot of fun since everyone loosened up and chatted normally. The kids went away to rest and we returned to the condo for wine and then bed.
10/6/16 Thursday
More PhotosAnother good day. Once we got going, we met Susan for Swedish Pancakes on 46th St NW. Pancakes were great, sausages were fine, all went well. Then we went to the Chihuley gallery of glass-work at Seattle Center. Fantastic artistic work in glass. Very interesting place.
Susan had to go off so she left. Later we went to the condo. I investigated a computer problem. Then we got ready to take Glenn & Lou to the airport. We stopped at 13 Coins for dinner, then left them with fond farewells at the Alaska terminal.
We returned to watch TV and see what hurricane Matthew is doing to our home state and to our city and to our home.
20161007 Friday
We're sitting in the condo watching TV on Weather Channel while following other sources on the iPhones. At this time (1100 PDT), there's considerable flooding in JaxBch; power, water & sewer have been cut off.
At this time (1930 PDT) it appears we didn't get shot by the hurricane Matthew. The center of the storm stayed 40 miles offshore so the winds at the beach were less than eye-wall velocity. The strongest gust might have been 90 mph, and the steady wind was in the region of 50 - 60 mph.
There was flooding due to the storm surge. The amount depended on the height of the sand dunes - those near our condo building held up pretty well. The flooding there is said to have been a foot or less on the street. We've no information yet on any damage to the car & truck. Other locations, especially where condos were built on the beach and where no dunes existed, had more flooding into their area streets and homes. The cut-out in the dunes at the life-guard station for quick access to the beach by emergency vehicles was a river flowing inland when the water reached that height.
We believe the wind velocity was not enough to break any windows or otherwise let in the water, so perhaps it's intact.
We're very happy it was not worse.
20161008 Saturday
A bunch of photosWe had planned to be together for a little while today, then split. That we did.
We met at Serious Pie and Pizza, a really nice-looking place with bar downstairs and eating both down and in a loft. We were up.
On weekends, they do a biscuit with many different options sort of brunch. I had a fennel sausage with fried egg and pepper relish biscuit, for example. Everyone was pleased with their selections and with the biscuit Susan ordered for the table.
We drove over to the MOHAI from there. Museum Of History And Industry is what it stands for. Today was "Fire" day, with loads of fire-fighting equipment and people there to demonstrate and instruct the visitors.
I jumped onto the fire boat first thing. It's capable of 22 knots and 10,000 gallons per minute pumping. Very clean engine room - they take care of the equipment.
We continued walking around the waterfront looking at other boats, including old passenger ships and the ancient tugboat that appeared in the 1930's movie "Tugboat Annie". A center for wooden boats is also located here so we saw some of them.
Then we went inside MOHAI. Its major sponsors are Boeing and Rainier Beer, two large local industries. There are many side rooms sponsored by others, each of them telling a segment of the history of Seattle or building up perception of the place as a part of the future.
The pictures will show you more.
After MOHAI, we split apart. We went back to the condo to read and watch TV.
