Cruising the americas

San Diego, California

The image at left was taken in 2005 from Point Loma. We are looking just east of north. The Submarine Base is in the foreground, and behind it is the northwestern part of the harbor and Shelter Island.

D & I worked here in the early 70's at the then-named Naval Undersea R&D Center, located just to the left off this picture. It was a great place to be young and in love.

Our daughter was born here. We'll be visiting her god-parents in Lakeside.

1/25/17 I picked up the rental car at the Hertz branch 15 blocks away. Today we shut off the water and the water heater and took the car to the airport. We checked in, waited a bit, and boarded AA5990 (a CR9 for those who care) and went to Dallas DFW. Nothing to report, a nice boring flight.

The next one was AA421 and again, nothing to report. On time. But the Rental Center in San Diego is new to us. All car rentals run out of the same 4-story building. Good setup.

Google Maps on our iPhone took us up Pacific Highway to Taylor Street and ran us through Old Town. I hadn't been there in years. Traffic was the usual evening rush hour, so it took us a while to get to Glenn & Lou's.

But once we got there, the fun began. Glenn had made a nice beef stew. Jake (their grandson) said Hi and left for the evening. We started chatting, catching up to date on all the usual stuff and nibbling beef stew while sipping wine. And then a little more wine.

Finally, we got tired about the time they usually retire, so we all went to bed.

1/26/17 Lakeside CA.. We got up fairly early, still on Eastern time and had coffee with Glenn. Marylou came out and joined us, then Glenn made up a great breakfast of eggs, bacon, sourdough bread toast & homemade jam. That filled us up.

We watched a good bit of TV for the presidential actions that were going on, and to see the rebuttals and protesting. Trump attacks things as a businessman does, and folks aren't used to that from a president. Going to take some getting used to for everyone.

Then we got going on the Villeneuve genealogy (Lou's folks). Lou had an envelope full of stuff - she read and I typed it into Family Tree Maker, keeping that synchronized with the tree on Ancestry.com. We made a lot of progress on data entry. That stirred up a mess of hints from Ancestry.com that had to be included or discarded, and that took a bit.

Finally we printed the results and quit. Lou can look at it off-line and make corrections. We'll figure out how to handle them later.

We got hungry again. Glenn the cook came up with grilled chicken, a green-bean casserole, and rice. It went great with a little more wine, and some port, and some more chatting.

1/27/17 Friday. Up early (for us) again. Rather cool outside & a good breeze. After more chatting, Glenn made up breakfast of cinnamon bread french toast - really good.

Again, we chatted most of the day away and did some computer work. I did some folllow-on genealogy work on Lou's stuff, and a little on Glenn's side. Printed out another "final" status for them to examine. Also showed Glenn how to get to the tree on his Windows machine.

Glenn went out for a hike. We got word Carla's son had fallen at school and was being taken for X-rays. We had to do some checking but didn't find out anything. Later we found he has a fracture of the upper arm and is in a splint to hold it while it heals.

Finally we went out to dinner at La Palapa in Lakeside, a Mexican food emporium they've been going to since the 70's. Good food, place was filled, lots of kids.

Came home, snd started thinking about tomorrow's trip to Rotterdam. Made plans and called Hal & Marge to include them. Off to bed early (for us) again.
