20050708  Sheep Mountain near Palmer AK  51/83  Cloudy, rain, warm in PM.             Picture Link

We ate, then I went to send e-mail. While there, I checked on the progress of Dennis the Hurricane and found not much change. I tried to call neighbor Daisy a couple of times but was only able to leave a message.

We then hooked up in the rain and headed out of Fairbanks. We went down the Richardson Highway to Paxson for lunch at the Inn there, then on to Glennallen where we visited the Wrangell-StElias National Park and Preserve Visitors Center. When we went into the park two years ago, we missed this place so we came back to see what we missed.

It's a nice place with a great video about the park. There's a walk outside with good views of the mountains. It's a really large park; we went in 60 miles and almost got to the middle of it.

After that, we headed west on the Glenn Highway/Tok Cutoff toward Anchorage. We stopped as we intended, at the Grand View RV Park across from Sheep Mountain.

We called Daisy again. She answered and said she'd given the garage door opener to Ray so he could get the tool to lower the hurricane shutters. She also said he told her it was done. Ray will keep the opener until this hurricane event is done in case we need need him to do something more.

The restaurant here keeps a telescope handy to view sheep on the side of the mountain. We decided to eat at their restaurant since we didn't get here till after 6:00pm. We had excellent grilled halibut. Then we retired to the little house to relax. Dolores will watch TV on the six-channel cable. I'll try to get the wifi running to see what's happening with Dennis.

Connecting to the wifi is simple but getting the server to work with you to pay for access is terrible. It's ssssllllloooooowwwww and makes you wonder if it's working at all. Very frustrating. But I finally got it to work (for too much money, but I'm desperate for news).

The message on the hurricane is that our county is the prime target as of now. Well, we've done all we can do. We'll watch on the Weather Channel, like everyone else.

More tomorrow......
