Took a ride today through the “Hill Country” northwest of New Braunfels, TX.

We wandered up TX-306 through Canyon Lake (resort area, man-made lake). Stopped at the Ft. Sam Houston RV Park in case we want to try to stay there another time. Nice enough, saw a bunch of deer, good marina. Don't know about Wifi & the rest.

On up 306 to other roads, eventually onto Ranch Road 1396, off which we found Luckenbach Loop Road. Yup, there is a Luckenbach, Texas, just like Willie and Waylon sang about (#1 for six weeks). There's a dance hall building, a food stand building, and the store/postoffice/bar. There is also a hat store. We bought a few things and had a glass before we moved on.

On into Fredericksburg, TX. We didn't know this is a tourist attraction place, other than for the National Museum of the Pacific, a large museum, much more than one would expect in a town of 9,000. Chester Nimitz, the Commander of the Navy in the Pacific in WWII was born here. One large new building, well laid out and with good exhibits, plus three more smaller buildings in old stores. We toured it for a couple hours and thought it quite nice.

Then we walked up and down the main street of the town, bought a few more things, and chatted with one of the local police. He says the town is nutsy in the summer with tourists, and in the spring/fall on weekends.

Off then in search of wildflowers in an area north of town that everyone said they'd be in. Nope. Not enough to take pictures of.

Then back through Fredericksburg to Kerrville, where we stopped to eat at Santo's Coyote. Not bad for a little place – D had the salmon & I had enchiladas.

Back across I-10 (another part of it from our part of it) to Boerne, then across TX-46 back to New Braunfels at 6:30 pm. Long day but fun.

Now we're doing pictures, diary, laundry, and relaxing. Tomorrow is Austin.
