Saturday, 27 March 2010 Nice weather, 315 miles.

We slept well the first night in our little house on wheels. We bounced up, had breakfast, drove to Racetrak for diesel fuel, then I-10W to I-12W to I-10W again (I-10 goes down through New Orleans, then back up). I-12 is more direct.

Then Texas roads from Orange to Bolivar via TX-73 then TX-124 to the Gulf Coast, then on down the coast on TX-87. At the end of the Bolivar peninsula, the road ends at the free ferry landing to cross to Galveston.

From Winnie on down to Bolivar, there's evidence of a hurricane. All the beach houses were/are blown away. Some rebuilding has started (hmm); they're all up on stilts. There's even a new elementary+middle school made of brick up on concrete stilts. Jeez. The ground back of the beach is lowland or swamp – I doubt any of it is greater than 10 feet above sea level.

We were examined prior to joining the ferry waiting line. Unfortunately, I had an empty gasoline container in the truck bed. They made me go back 10 miles to the gas station and fill it with water. No gas fumes, please. Ok. Then we joined the line for the ferry. We watched several big ships go up and down the Houston Ship Channel, then we crossed. I pulled out my camera to find the battery dead.

Off the ferry and into Galveston, then we followed the Seawall road down along the beach. Lots of trucks parked out on the beach, similar to Daytona Beach, FL. Lots of spring breakers here, as in PCB. Rather breezy, though, so not many bikinis or they were covered with hoodies.

Seawall turned into FM3005. FM stands for Farm to Market and is some sort of special road designation in TX. When I find it out, I'll tell you.

South of Galveston, smaller communities start, with clumps of houses and a few small condos. Jamaica Beach is one, and we stopped at Jamaica Beach RV Park.

While checking in, the manager told us his wife had overbooked the place this weekend, and assigned us a grassy-area site for a dollar and a real site tomorrow night. We set up in the grass, and connected power, cable, and water. We have everything but sewer here on the grass, so we might just stay here. We'll see what tomorrow brings.

Took Dolores to church, went to a market and bought bananas, without which D can't live. Back to the little house to test Wifi. Slooowwww. Finally had to go get D from church. When we returned, Wifi was a little better. I played with an external Wifi device that should perform better than the internal; seems to do just that.

So we watched TV and Wifi-ed while relaxing.
