20050729 Burns Lake BC 54.2N/125.7W 51/75 Cloudy, then mostly cloudy. Cool.
We got up a little late due to processing pictures till the wee hours. We saw the Smiths on their way out, but not again. Finally, we hooked up and departed, going first to the fuel station at Meziadin Junction, 30 miles east of Stewart.
There, we filled up (she pushed every molecule into that tank that she could) and exchanged information on roads. We headed south down the last of the Cassiar Highway. Just a little south, a small black bear cub showed itself on the left edge of the road. He bounded back into the brush quickly, probably because mommy woofed at him. Cute!!!! The Cassiar is still far and away a better scenic road than the Alaskan Highway.
We got to the end of the Cassiar at the Yellowhead Highway and turned left. We went through the string of small towns spread along the Canadian National railroad until we eventually arrived at Burns Lake. It's Friday of a long weekend, so people were running around getting ready for it. We got caught in the stampede because we needed to do much of the same sort of thing.
We spent $32CDN on a truck wash place so we could pressure-wash the pickup and trailer; not a perfect job but we got most of the dirt off. We fueled up at a station on a weird corner I thought we'd never get out of, but did. We got cash from an ATM in a CIBC bank in a strange lot in which I had to do a 180 to get out, and did. We pulled off the road into a information center lot in front of a wine & beer store so I could walk up and get beer without getting into their tiny lot.
Then we went out east of town, found the KOA (northernmost KOA, would you believe), checked in and settled in. We did a simple chicken dinner and settled in with chores, among them naming the picture files from last night, and catching up the finances, and doing these notes.
It looks as though we might have some dark tonight; it was nearly dark last night but you could still see some things without a light.
Tomorrow, we're onward to Valemount BC, just short of Jasper AB. About 310 miles after the 290 today.
