Rather a dull day today. More clouds, mist, rain, etc. Typical NW weather, the kind that makes you really appreciate a clear day.
We drove east out of Port Angeles and had a look at Port Townsend (and had lunch there) on our way to Bremerton. We wanted to be in Bremerton so that we could get an early ferry to Seattle, turn in the car, and go to the ship.
I chose the Oyster Bay Inn motel because I’d seen it several times when I traveled through there for work but never had the chance to stay in it. All in all, it’s a nice little place but nothing extra. It does have a dining room with a view over the bay of the same name, so we decided to eat there later.
We went to a local diner for lunch, where the Bremerton USSVI guys were holding “Soup Down”. Soup Down was usually held on the boats at 1600 to give the oncoming watch a bowl of soup and a sandwich or something before they went on watch; the off-coming watch then stopped for something to eat before they went to do whatever was next. There were eight or ten people there, so we had our lunch and chatted. None of them were coming on the cruise, so that left things flat for saying “see you later”.
We cruised around in the car, and dropped into the local Navy Exchange on the grounds of Puget Sound Naval Shipyard. We bought a couple of books for the trip. The Chief’s Club was no longer open. I remember it from a time when I met Tom Teters there and we discussed our futures; must have been about 1983/84.
We looked around some more, then went back to the Inn & had dinner. Then we re-packed for the next day and rested.
