You did it!! You found our pages for our trip to Sweden and the following Baltic Cruise.
The first phase of the trip takes us to the Bergslagen in Sweden. Bergslagen is “mountain law” in Swedish. The folks there were said to be rather independent in the early years, something like our Appalachia. Copper mining was started sometime around 1200 AD and made Sweden a formidable trading partner.
We’ll go to Kopparberg, in Örebro county, in Sweden. Kopparberg is the center of the Ljusnarsberg municipal district (sort of a big township). Kopparberg is not to be confused with the city of Falun’s company named Stora Kopparberg (Copper Mountain), the world’s oldest corporation, which is some 60 miles north.
Owen’s father’s parents emigrated from Kopparberg in 1888/1890. They were Jan Erik Karlsson (in the states John Erik Carlson) and Alma Eleanora Eriksdotter, later Erikson when the patronymic Swedish naming system was dropped for a family-style system similar to ours in “Amerika”. They were each 20 years old when they left Sweden.
After the stay in the Bergslagen, we joined old friends from the Manassas, Virginia, region on a Baltic Cruise on the ship Azamara Journey. In short, the trip goes from Stockholm (Sweden) to Helsinki (Finland) to St Petersburg (Russia) to Tallin (Estonia) to Visby (Sweden) to Copenhagen (Denmark).
