20120616 Jacksonville

We closed up the house, informed the neighbors and neighborhood watch, and headed east. I-10 was as boring as ever.

At Jacksonville, we came into the house as everyone was rising from a nap (Bill had been up early to run, Lana wasn’t feeling 100%, Jamie because he’s a kid. We hugged and said “hi” and chatted for a bit.

Lana remembered she had arranged daddy-day presents for Bill & Owen, so we headed to the Riverside section of town to the “Intuition” micro-brewery. We had a pint while Lana got the baskets. Each of us received a basket with an Intuition pint glass, coozie, coasters, tee-shirt, quart-size growler and a certificate for a free filling of the growler. I selected their “I-10 IPA”.

We drove the growlers back to the house and into the fridge, then went to Jax Beach to the restuarant “TacoLu”. Valet parking, place jammed to the rafters, seated after 30 minutes, good table way back in a corner, great tacos and sides. Jalapeno margaritas.

Back then to the house, where we all collapsed on couches and chairs. It came time to put Jamie to bed, so we did the customary ritual. About 60 seconds later he came out and announced that he had forgotten how to sleep. His dad put him back with encouragement.

Lana has retired, the rest of us are yawning, so it’s time to end the day. (Continued after the picture!)

20110617 Sunday

Up early, off to Krispy Kreme, return with coffee and doughnuts and juice. Ate, drank, played with Jamie, petted Baxter the dog, got ready for church. We put Jamie in kid-care and went to church, then reclaimed Jamie and went to One Ocean for breakfast.

We had a nice breakfast with view of the ocean. Jamie only got away running twice and was somewhat behaved, but it’s hard being two when there are so many things to see, touch, taste, and learn about. We finished and went back to the house.

There, we loafed and watched old golf episodes (50th anniversary of the US Open where Nicklas defeated Palmer in a playoff) until the US Open came on; we continued watching with breaks for playing with Jamie and to get takeout food. We ate and put Jamie to bed, then continued watching and talking and chatting.

Simpson defeated Furyk to win the Open, which disappointed me because I like Furyk.

Eventually, we just got tired and went to bed.

Jamie got D & his parents up, then I joined in. I decided to do practical things. First, I got a haircut at the place Lana takes Jamie.

Then I went to CompUSA to buy a 32gig SDHC card on which to back up the photos we’ll be taking. I have a card reader I can plug into the USB port on the Macbook to use the SDHC card as connected external memory. Came back to the house and tested it by backing up yesterday’s pictures - works fine.

Dolores was going to buy a clutch-type purse, but Lana is loaning her one, so we don’t have to go get that. Lana’s busy doing yard work. Jamie’s busy playing, which is what he should do.

Later in the afternoon I went in search of used paperbacks for the trip. Found a couple at a going-out-of-business store. Stopped briefly at the VFW to say hi to Sherry and picked up another book there. Then to the Publix supermarket for dinner fixings.

Bill came home and started the grill charcoal. We all did something and ate grilled bratwurst, sauerkraut, southern potato salad, spaetzle, and rolls. With beer.

We put Jamie to bed with the usual ritual. Then the house got very quiet. We drifted off to bed early.

No pictures.

20120619 Tuesday

Bill & Lana called the police near midnight last night for a noisy family disturbance in the street that had overflowed from a house across the street and down two houses. Police took care of it.

Then we had a mystery visitor in the middle of the night when Baxter the dog nosed his way into our bedroom; the door self-closed, trapping him with us. Dolores told me to get up and let him out.

Lana’s taking Jamie to nursery school and Baxter to the veterinarian for a skin problem. I’m doing Lana’s to-do list (slowly).

I finally traced down a problem with the house A/C, took out umpteen bags of magnolia leaves to the curb, capped off a no-longer-desired sprinkler head and replaced a six-foot section of six-foot-high fence with materials Bill had on hand. Only two trips to Lowes were required. Rather proud of my old self, but that shower certainly felt good. The IPA also helped my sense of well-being.

Lana returned with Baxter; the vet’s verdict is “allergies”. Hmm. We put various creams and ointments on the dog. Then Lana went back to school and returned with Jamie.

While I was working the fence, Lana ripped out a bunch of roots where she wants to put an area for Baxter the Dog to have his future house. Dolores put Jamie in for a nap. When Jamie awoke, it was too late to do much, so we sat and played. Dolores did laundry so we’ll have something to wear when we return.

Bill arrived home from work, and we went to Singletons in Mayport for dinner - a shack on the St Johns River, which is the port access for Jacksonville. Saw two container ships and one automobile carrier depart while we were there. Jamie enjoyed his grilled cheese and fries and iced tea and crackers and poppers and more crackers. The rest of us had various fishes and crabs with beers and wines. Pelicans and cormorants everywhere. Very nice.

At home, Jamie decided he would run all over the yard, then all over the house, then put his underwear on his head and run around the house pants-less. Dolores just had to make faces at him, which caused him to giggle histerically. He was as wound up as a two-dollar watch when finally captured for bath and night-time ritual.

We pulled out suitcases and shuffled things to their proper places for tomorrow’s flight to EWR. Then we watched TV for news and weather. The forecast for tomorrow at EWR is 98*F and 50% humidity. Wow. We were going to fly up in slacks and jackets; now we’ll do it shorts and short-sleeved shirts.
