20120329 Austin TX to Highlands TX (190 miles) Overcast, light rain

We were up early for breakfast. I went to the office and arranged for a stay here from September 24 to October 8. I was assured that was fine, but to call 30 days prior to confirm.

We pulled up stakes and snuck out of town via Loop1 South, 360 East, 71 East, and US290. We wandered along just fine until we neared the Houston outskirts. We had thought that, if we skirted the place, we wouldn't encounter much madness. So we came across on 2920 and 1960. BAD decision. We slugged along through suburb after suburb with traffic light after traffic light. Incredible congestion.

When we come through here next (if ever), we'll stay on I-10 and just blast our way through Houston during some non-rush-hour period. Blech.

We finally reached our goal for the day, San Jacinto Riverfront RV Park in Highlands TX. We checked in and were given a pull-thru. It started raining harder, so we gave up on our idea of visiting the San Jacinto monument, where ol' Sam Houston captured Santa Anna and effectively secured freedom from Mexico for the Republic of Texas.

Instead, we leveled the trailer and intend to stay inside. We'll listen to the rain on the roof, make dinner, do computer things, and read. I'm doubting my planned route for tomorrow, so I'll re-examine that.

Humph.
