We got onto the road again, going west on H1 to the airport where we stopped at the Lei Stands to pick up a lei. Then onto H2 going up the middle of the island to Schofield Barracks army post.

Good friends of Glenn & Lou (Frank & Joyce Gomez) with whom we're also acquainted were stationed here in 1958; their baby girl was born prematurely and lived only a week. She's buried in the post cemetery at Schofield. We found the grave rather easily and draped the lei over the headstone. We took pictures of the lovely setting and talked about things, then went on.

Next stop was the Dole Pineapple plantation and store. We bought goodies (mom and Lou bought pearl pendants) and looked at pineapples. The pineapple plant has stickers on the leaves and hard parts all over; altogether a very hostile plant.

We continued to the North Shore at Haleiwa and stopped for lunch at Bob's Pizza, one of several local institutions. Then northeast along the shore. At one point there was a whole mob of cars which we think now was a surfing tournament at Pipeline. We went on to another beach that had fewer cars and parked. We took pictures of surfers and the surf and each other. Saturday's paper shows that six surfers were injured in that tournament, in 16 to 20-foot waves.

Onward to Kahuku point and down the windward side. Stopped for pictures a couple of times, one for Chinaman's Hat island. We came back to Honolulu via the Likelike Freeway and H1.

Happy hour, play with the cats, teriyaki steaks with rice, asparagus and salad. Talked the evening away.

Turns out that a navy cruiser (Port Royal) is aground off Hickam AFB. It's easily visible from the condo's lanai. There's another four-striper who'll never make admiral.
